Following Dapol’s decision to progress N Gauge models of Gresley BG and modified buffet carriages to the tooling stage, it is now calling for expressions of interest in N Gauge models of London Midland & Scottish Railway (LMS) Period III 57ft non-lavatory suburban coaches.
Stanier’s Period III designs were introduced in 1933, starting with several series of non-corridor coaches for suburban services. They lasted for around 40 years, with the final examples being withdrawn in 1967.

Four versions are proposed:
- Non-corridor third to diagram 1906/1906a.
- Non-corridor composite to diagram 1921/1921a.
- Non-corridor brake third to diagram 1907.
- Non-corridor driving brake third to diagram 1856.
Dapol are also planning to produce four livery variations, including LMS Period III Crimson Lake (1934-1947), BR Unlined Crimson (1949-1956), BR Unlined Maroon (1957-1959) and BR Lined Maroon (1959-1967.

The reason for seeking expressions of interest is straightforward: Dapol wishes to produce the models, but is unsure whether the sales volume for a general release would justify its decision. With that in mind, and assuming the project progresses, modellers will have the chance to pre-order the models once photographs of decorated samples become available. It will then take approximately a further nine to twelve months for the models to arrive and be ready for dispatch.
Dapol reiterates that no charges will be incurred before the models are ready for shipment, and without the buyer’s authorisation.
Retail price of the carriages will be £39.95.
In February, Dapol announced the upcoming release of N Gauge models of Class 33 locomotives and six-wheel milk tankers.
