The team behind the Bristol Temple Quarter project has released detailed plans for the new transport hub at Bristol Temple Meads station.
The new transport hub, to be called the “Southern Gateway”, will include new pedestrian access into Temple Meads, a new cycle hub, and a new multi-storey car park.
It will connect with planned walking and cycling routes through the Bedminster, Mead Street, and Whitehouse Street regeneration areas to improve sustainable access to the station from the south of the city.
Funding for the project is from a £95m government grant awarded to the Temple Quarter in 2022.

The Southern Gateway is a vital first move to start unlocking sustainable new homes and jobs on a huge scale in the centre of Bristol and is crucial to unlocking the potential of Temple Quarter and the land around the station.
Creating a modern, high-quality transport hub will improve travel to and from the station and free up space for the developments and public spaces the city needs.
The proposals for the new transport hub at Bristol Temple Meads station include:
- A 350-space car park for passengers and staff, with accessible spaces, electric vehicle charging, and short-stay parking for drop off and pick up.
- A secure cycle hub for over 700 bikes, including cargo bikes and accessible cycles.
- A new pedestrian access to improve access from the south of the city.
- New bus stops and a futureproofed space for mass transit.

Public consultation events will take place on various dates in February at: Cabot Circus; Tesco in Oxford Street, Totterdown; Co-op in Wyatts View, St Annes; Temple Meads station,; and Temple Quay.
A planning application for the Southern Gateway is due to be submitted in April this year.

A Network Rail spokesman commented that it is another step in transforming Bristol Temple Meads station into a world-class transport hub, and the new Southern Gateway will improve the passenger experience dramatically and give Bristol the welcome the city deserves.

A new eastern entrance to the station that provides access to the new University of Bristol Enterprise Campus is due to open in Autumn 2026.
“This is an important step along the way for Temple Quarter and for the West of England. It’s also another boost to our regional travel ambitions, utilising government funding secured by my Mayoral Combined Authority, and will help create new jobs and economic growth. Plans for the new Southern Gateway to Brunel’s historic station sit alongside work already underway for a new Eastern Entrance to Temple Meads itself. New spaces for bikes, electric vehicle charging, and space for further transport connections will completely change commuters’ experience of our region’s busiest station.”
Dan Norris, West of England Mayor

Long overdue, let’s hope the bus links are actually at the station entrance and well advertised to arriving rail passengers.
