(Injector song)
THE most important item of steam locomotion is its Injector! Twinned, With single drain to atmosphere, Is Water inlet, followed by usually boiler face steam, then back to water for ‘tuning’ into song and with no waste, (bar the odd drip)! Done while clamping your hat down in that self induced hurricane of a wind outside the window? The 280 PSI of the Bulleid was later reduced a little! With other engines boiler pressure close behind! I spoke recently of fancy boiler linings that protect the boilers wear for a longer life! But the Injector sings while putting cold water against that pressure vessel of Seething, Turbulent, Excited chaotic mass that creates steam as fast as my driver directs it? Cold water simply walks through the injector with no pump? And past all that pressure against it? ‘Seeing is to believe with no reasoning’! Mind you, I’m a bit thicker than most! (My picture tries to show that general area)?

Ah, injectors. Marvellous devices, using steam at boiler pressure to push water into the boiler against that very same pressure. Sounds like magic! As one of my books puts it, “the principle of the injector is a very good example of the intelligent application of natural laws”.

@AlexF, Intelligent being the key word! As it took a very clever fitter, ‘back in the day’, To sort that big problem out?
