1st July 2025. Thanks to a friend visiting from Australia seeking a steam experience on a Tuesday we headed to the Ffestiniog and Welsh Highland Railway in Porthmadog, taking the Mountain Spirit service to Blaenau Ffestiniog and back, hauled by James Spooner. Not only did we have a fantastically scenic trip, we also saw 7 locos in action, including two Bayer-Garratts, which brought back fond memories for both of us, having seen many of these locos in operation in South Africa. We also saw Welsh Pony in steam approaching Boston Lodge, three of the Double Fairlies and Linda the 2-4-0 saddle tank.
Nursing an injured tendon I hobbled about carrying only a mobile phone for these pictures, which didn’t come out too badly in the end. I am definitely going back when I’m more mobile to get a better look at these fantastic locos, to do the Boston Lodge tour and the return trip to Carnarvon. Highly recommended!!
