After a five-year absence, InterCity 225 trains are once again operating London North Eastern Railway (LNER) services on the East Coast Main Line.
Operating services on the line between London King’s Cross and Newcastle since the 1990s, InterCity 225 trains were superseded by a new, modern fleet of Azuma trains in September 2020. InterCity 225 trains now mainly operate on the service from London to West Yorkshire.

LNER introduced many extra services in its December 2025 timetable in its biggest timetable transformation for a decade.
From yesterday, Monday, 30th March, the 14:33 departure on weekdays from London King’s Cross to Newcastle is in the hands of an InterCity 225 train, returning to London King’s Cross at 18:27 from Newcastle.
At weekends, an InterCity 225 train will also depart from London King’s Cross at 12:33, and depart from Newcastle on its return to London at 16:27.
As well as reintroducing InterCity 225 trains on the London to Newcastle route, five extra weekday services have been introduced, including a new return service between London King’s Cross and Harrogate service, departing in the early afternoon from King’s Cross and returning in the early evening from Harrogate.
There are also extra early morning trains from King’s Cross to Leeds, Doncaster to King’s Cross, and late-night trains to Doncaster, and a previous evening train to Doncaster now continues to Edinburgh.

Passengers can now purchase tickets from travel by LNER on services up to Friday, 18th September, and full LNER travel information is online at www.lner.co.uk.
A unique interactive archive has been created that documents the history of the InterCity 225 fleet on the East Coast Mainline, and holds complete details of every passenger service operated by an LNER InterCity 225 in 2021 and 2022.

Given the superior quality of the ride and the more comfortable seats on 225+91 compared to Ironing boarded seated class 800 … Then hopefully these services will be a great appreciated by everyone.
These trains have a much better livery than that which is proposed by GBR, which is absolutely awful .
