Northern has named a train ‘Super League 30’, in celebration of the thirtieth birthday of the rugby league competition.

The operator is now offering tickets which allow fans to travel anywhere in the North for just ten pounds a day.

Northern unveiled the train at an event at Leeds station on Thursday (26 March) attended by rugby league stars Adrian Morley and Danny McGuire.

Over the coming months, thousands of rugby fans will see the Class 195 unit as it travels around the North of England.

Super League is celebrating its birthday week, three decades after its launch in March 1996.

Two of the fixtures that formed part of the first round of the competition thirty years ago are being replayed this week. On Thursday, Castleford Tigers beat Bradford Bulls by 40 points to 28, and on Sunday, Leeds Rhinos will host Warrington Wolves.

Northern has been an official partner of the league for the last decade, and to celebrate this milestone, it is offering fans £10 tickets, which allow them to travel anywhere on the Northern network for a day.

Super League clubs based in the North of England have unique codes which they will issue to supporters, who can then use them to buy tickets or pass them on to friends and family.

Northern also runs the operator runs an annual competition, giving grassroots teams a chance to win Super League tickets, training equipment and match kit.

Last year, Northern named a train after Rob Burrow, the rugby league player who died from motor neurone disease (MND) and campaigned for greater awareness and funding to tackle the disease.

Northern worked with Rob’s family and the MND Association to create a design that commemorates his life and raises awareness of the disease, which affects more than 5,000 people in the UK at any one time.

“We’re incredibly proud to support the Super League and wanted to do something special to mark its 30th birthday and the 10th year of our partnership.

“That’s why we have unveiled the Super League 30 train and decided to offer fans discounted tickets, which allow them to travel across the Northern network.

“We remain firmly committed to supporting all formats of the game, including the Women’s Super League and Wheelchair Super League, because it is so important to the communities we serve across the North of England.”
