Ahead of Easter, Network Rail is reminding young people to remain safe around the railway.
They are highlighting the dangers of trespassing and overhead power lines, which carry 25,000 volts of electricity.
A lot of trespass incidents occur around school holidays, usually as a result of shortcuts, curiosity or peer pressure.
While these incidents aren’t necessarily done with criminal intent, the consequences are often life-changing.
Some incidents are entirely accidental, just from being too close to power lines while fishing, using selfie sticks or flying kites.
Network Rail is prompting people not to take risks, stay alert and think twice, and if anyone witnesses trespassing, they should contact British Transport Police on 61016.
“Easter brings more young people outdoors, and we want everyone to enjoy the break safely. The railway is never a place to take risks.
“We’re asking families to speak openly about rail safety and remind children that the tracks are not a shortcut or a place to explore. A moment of curiosity can have serious consequences, and we’re urging everyone to stay alert, stay safe, and stay off the tracks.”
Innis Keith, director of Health, Safety & Environment at Network Rail Scotland
