Stadler has signed a contract with Turkish State Railways (TCDD TTaşımacılık A.Ş.) for the supply of 35 type EURO4001 diesel-electric locomotives.

Included in the contract is three years maintenance and repair services, spares, consumables, special tools, and test equipment.

EURO4001 locomotives have a Co-Co wheel arrangement, a maximum speed of 120 km/h, and are the most powerful diesel-electric locomotives in Europe. They are specially designed for use on heavy freight services on non-electrified lines and on lines with steep gradients.

Stadler has previously sold over 400 EURO type locomotives to 12 European countries, and to Uruguay and Turkey, where EURODUAL versions of the locomotives have been operating reliabily for the past four years and exhibiting a high energy efficiency.

Locomotives for the current contract will designed and manufactured at Stadler’s competence centre at Valencia in Spain. Their delivery, local integration, and entry into service will be overseen by Stadler Service Türkiye, working in partnership with AYKAL Group A.Ş. and CERTIFER Türkiye.

EURO4001 locomotives fully comply with Euro Stage V emission standards, and compared with the railway’s existing fleet, they show a reduction of over 90% in particulate matter emissions and over 50% in nitrogen oxides and hydrocarbons. They also meet European TSI interoperability requirements, and incorporate both the ETCS Level 2 and the Turkish national ATS train control systems.

The Turkish government’s investments in these locomotives are a contribution to expanding the rail sector and establishing the country as an international logistics hub. Modernising the locomotive fleet with state-of-the-art freight locomotives, including the EURO4001 locomotives, is a step towards increasing the annual transport volume from around 29,000 containers in 2021 to around 400,000 containers by 2030. As well as Stadler, Turkey has also purchased locomotives from Alstom.

“The EURO4001 is the most advanced and powerful diesel-electric locomotive in Europe. We are delighted that it will enable us to make a significant contribution to Turkey’s goal of creating an efficient, interoperable freight transport network that is committed to reducing emissions.”
