The ACMU Society has launched a fundraiser to allow work to start on Class 315 No. 315856.
The unit is currently based at the Llanelli and Myydd Mawr Railway, but its integrity has started to suffer from major water ingress.
The society says that if work does not start soon, then there is a serious risk of losing the sole surviving Class 315 in preservation.
The fundraiser has been set with a target of £1000 and this will allow for emergency weatherproofing work to start.
An agreement has been reached with the railway to allow DMS No. 64571 to be shunted to the workshop for a short period in January 2026.
With the Driving Motor Standard in the workshop, volunteers will address some of the water ingress and apply primer and undercoat to stabilise the vehicle’s condition.
There is match funding on this fundraiser, so that for every £1 raised, a total of £2 will go towards the project. This is thanks to an anonymous donor and means the impact has been increased.

“I am pleased to work with the Llanelli & Mynydd Mawr Railway with our agreement to provide temporary undercover facilities for the leading vehicle of the ACMU Society’s preserved Class 315 unit. We hope the work undertaken indoors will be fruitful for the vehicle’s longevity in preservation, and set a strong foundation for providing similar treatment to the remaining vehicles throughout 2026.”
