The Rail Accident Investigation Branch (RAIB) is looking into an incident involving an 11-year-old child and a tram.

The incident happened at Crossacres tram stop on the Manchester MetroLink on Tuesday, 7th October 2025, at approximately 15:37. The child was believed to have been trapped between the tram and the edge of the platform before sustaining life-changing injuries as the tram departed, dragging them 20 meters along the platform.

The RAIB will look into several key areas, including the events which led up to the incident and any influences that may have been involved.

They will also look at the current arrangements regarding the risks of trams departing from tram stops and the procedures of running two trams coupled together, along with other factors, including staff training and competence.

The investigation is being conducted separately from the tramway industry and the Office for Road and Rail (ORR).

The findings of the incident and any proposed recommendations will be released by the RAIB in due course.
