For three weekends from the end of September, train services will be severely disrupted between Rhyl and Llandudno Junction in North Wales because of essential engineering works.
On the weekends of Saturday 27th to Monday, 29th September, Saturday 4th to Monday, 6th October, and Saturday, 11th to Monday, 13th October, Network Rail will carry out work as part of a major programme of engineering for maintaining and improving the safety and reliability of the railway in North Wales.
On each weekend, the work will last from 01.50 am on Saturday mornings until 04.35 am on Monday morning.
Included in the works are:
- Improving the long-term stability of the railway and providing better safety arrangements inside Penmaenrhos Tunnel.
- Carrying out maintenance of Pensarn Bridge.
- Inspecting walls and bridges in the Abergele and Colwyn Bay area.
During these weekends, rail replacement bus services will provide alternative transport between Rhyl and Llandudno Junction. Anyone intending to travel in this area during the affected dates should check with www.nationalrail.co.uk/journey-planner for the latest travel updates.
Network Rail has expressed its thanks to passengers, local homes, and stakeholders for the disruption that will be caused by this essential work.
Network Rail has released plans for new accessible footbridges at Pensarn and Prestatyn, whilst Transport for Wales is planning to introduce a Metro-like train service across North Wales.
“The upcoming engineering works are a key part of our ongoing commitment to maintaining a safe and dependable railway. These improvements are essential to ensuring the network remains resilient and continues to meet the needs of passengers and communities well into the future.”
