As part of a £140 million project, Darlington station has received a power supply upgrade.

This means that Network Rail can move onto the next step of the project.

This includes installing two new platforms, which will allow for more trains to run through the station in the future.

This does mean that they will have to carry out some essential signalling work, which means that the lines through Darlington will be closed on the 11th and 12th of October.

Services will be reduced or diverted, and rail replacement buses will be in place.

The station upgrades were planned to be completed by the end of this year; however, it’s completion date has been moved to spring 2026.

This is due to the need to fully weatherproof the new footbridge that was installed to connect the new platforms.

“The upcoming signalling work is a key step towards opening the new platforms at Darlington station. Passengers are advised to plan ahead with their respective train operator as we carry out this essential work.

“While we had originally aimed to complete the overall project by the end of 2025, additional design requirements – particularly for the complex footbridge structure – mean we’re now targeting spring 2026. We’re grateful to passengers, residents, and our partners for their continued patience and support as we work to complete this transformative upgrade.”
