From 6th September, the pedestrian subway at Bexley station will be permanently closed.

Following structural inspections of the subway, South Eastern Railway has made the decision to close it after finding significant structural defects.

Customers will be required to use the lifts and the footbridge, which opened in 2024.

The project to install the new lifts began in 2023 as part of a £6 million Access for All investment, which allowed the station to become step-free.

The subway entrances will be covered over, allowing for more space on the platforms.

The subway will be filled in and works will be completed in November, where Network Rail will move onto improving the platform surface at lighting.

“We’re really sorry for the inconvenience caused by closing the subway.  Our engineers carefully considered whether it could be repaired. Unfortunately, because the structure also supports the busy railway line above – with both passenger and heavy freight trains passing through – the work would have been highly complex, disruptive, and extremely costly. Closing the subway is the safest and most practical step we can take for our customers.

“We know this will affect many people and we haven’t taken the decision lightly.

“We want to reassure our customers there’s no immediate safety risk – the subway will remain safe to use in the meantime and will remain open into early September.”

David Davidson, Chief Operating Officer for the South Eastern Railway
