Colas Rail UK has announced that it will be bringing the South Yorkshire Supertram embedded rail repair programme into its second year.

Colas’ Urban Division will be leading the project for the client, South Yorkshire Mayoral Combined Authority (SYMCA).

They will be focusing on upgrading aspects of Sheffield’s Light Rail System, including upgrading the highway infrastructure, concrete track slabs, and encapsulating polymer surrounding the rails.

The work will focus on the heart of Sheffield’s city centre at West Street, to help make journeys more reliable and resilient.

They carried out in-depth surveys, where West Street was identified as a top priority for year two of the programme.

The surveys found that there was a need for a more targeted approach to safeguard the system for road users, pedestrians and passengers.

During the work, over 2600m of rail adjoining polymer will be replaced, and the team have already begun work to repair defective track slabs.

“The team we have working in Sheffield are very skilled and committed to ensuring we deliver a quality product which ultimately ensures not only the safety and reliability of the light rail network in Sheffield but also ensures the safety of the local stakeholders and also commuters whether they’re in cars, on buses and pedestrians.

“We very much look forward to continuing to provide an excellent service to our client and the people of South Yorkshire.”

Colas Rail UK Project Manager, Hamish Falcone
