The Talyllyn Railway held its Awdry Extravaganza last month, and is now being officially marked as the railways biggest ever event.

Between the 18th and 20th July, Sir Handel, Rusty and Fred visited from the Skarloey Railway alongside Duke the Lost Engine and Mike the Small Engine, visiting from the Ffestiniog Railway and Ravenglass and Eskdale Railway.

Duke was in steam running up and down a temporary section of track at Tywyn Wharf, and crews reckon that they did around 20 miles each day.

Also visiting was George the Steam Roller. This was once owned by Rev Teddy Boston, who was a very close friend of Rev Awdry, and it is believed Thistledown (its real name) was the inspiration for George.

Visitors to the event came from New Zealand, Kuwait, Poland, Japan, the USA and more, and gave a great sense of community, not more so than the finale which saw Tywyn Wharf filled with fans for the grand finale.

Sales from tickets, merch, refreshments and other sales generated £151,000 worth of income for the railway and an estimated £250,000 for the local economy, with local hotels and eateries sold out.

RailAdvent was at the event, and have produced a DVD showcasing all three days of the event. It is available to purchase now by clicking here. It is also available to stream anywhere in the world on RailAdvent Plus – click here to become a Gold member and watch instantly

While the Awdry Extravaganzas may now be on a break, there is no doubt at the Railway that
there will be continue to be Awdry themed events in the future – not only for the Railway’s
benefit, but for the community that transcends borders that has built itself upon our humble little
line.
