An exhibition on the story of Newport Station has been launched by the Isle of Wight Steam Railway at the Newport and Carisbrooke Community Centre.

The exhibition will run into November and documents the station from the Island’s railways’ first opening in the 1860s until the 1920s, when there were a number of railway companies.

The station was originally the hub of the Island’s railways and was impressively large for the Island.

Nothing of the station remains today, as it was demolished during the rebuilding of Newport and is now where the current dual carriageway is.

The exhibition features images from the IWSR archive, paintings and other archive items.

The exhibition provides visitors with an idea of how Newport used to be and how it used to fit into the town’s layout.

It also celebrates the opening of the Ryde and Newport Railway 150 years ago, as well as celebrating Railway 200.
