Network Rail has successfully completed a Department for Transport Access for All project at Alfreton station.

They began a £6.75 million project in February last year to make the station step-free. They worked to renew the station’s footbridge and added two new lifts.

The work to repair the bridge was carried out overnight, meaning there was no disruption to services during the day.

Travelling through the station will now be much easier for those who use wheelchairs, have limited mobility and are carrying luggage.

The entrance to the station has a new ramp connecting it to the car park, and the platforms have been resurfaced and have added new tactile paving.

The station also got a lighting and CCTV upgrade to make the station safer.

The new lifts are now operational, but will see some varying operational hours until the end of June while the remaining CCTV work is completed.

“The Government’s investment in Alfreton station will deliver lasting benefits for passengers and improve access to the wider transport network.

“Our Access for All programme is making positive impacts across the country, and we’re clear in our ambitions for our transport network to be accessible so people can travel easily, confidently, and with dignity.”

Rail Minister Lord Peter Hendy
