South Western Railway customers can now enjoy a better WiFi connection while travelling on services between Earlsfield and Basingstoke.

The train operator has become the first to introduce rail-5G WiFi in Europe.

Across the 70 kilometres of track, customers can use the superfast WiFi to make calls, stream content, and download large files on the go.

Journeys can now be more enjoyable and productive compared to those of other operators who rely on the wider telecoms network.

Speeds have previously been limited by connections to local masts, which are being occupied by hundreds.

FirstGroup’s rail division and South Western Railway have worked together to implement the new solution on one of the network’s busiest sections. This solution was specifically built for railways to drastically improve internet speeds and thus the enjoyment of train travel.

SWR carried out a pilot test on their Island Line on the Isle of Wight, which was highly successful.

SWR is planning on enhancing connections across the whole network, which, along with other improvements, should begin over the next few months.

The new technology requires trackside poles and antennas, which need to be installed along the route as well as on trains.

“We’re thrilled that our customers travelling between Earlsfield and Basingstoke are the first to benefit from this unprecedented superfast Wi-Fi.

“Customers can now stream, download files, video call, and much more – without worrying about their connection.

“Whether travelling for work or leisure, having access to a strong and reliable internet connection will make their time on board more productive and enjoyable.

“We hope this will make travelling by train an even more attractive option, helping to get people out of cars and onto the rail network.”

Peter Williams, Customer and Commercial Director for South Western Railway
