Model train manufacturer Hornby has partnered up with Lumo, the open-access rail operator, to create a new collector’s item.

The new model will recreate the Hitachi 803 fully electric train, allowing model rail fans to replicate Lumo’s five-car fleet.

The model comes with two model power cars, with one being motorised and three coaches.

There will also be an option for the HM7000 Control System, which will allow for app-based control.

The full-size fleet, built by Hitachi, is made up of all-electric passenger trains, which were built at Newton Aycliffe factory in County Durham and went into service in 2021.

The 803s share the same body as earlier models but use batteries to power the onboard facilities, making it not only more environmentally friendly but also award-winning.

The fleet produces 25 times less carbon for each customer, per kilometre, than other forms of travel.

The new models are priced at £549.99 and can be purchased directly from Hornby.

“It’s a privilege to be able to work alongside such an iconic British business and bring our services to life in a way that can be treasured and enjoyed for years to come. This comes as we celebrate 200 years of the passenger railway, and having a Lumo model introduced alongside trailblazing locomotives like Stephenson’s Rocket shows a perfect blend of tradition and innovation. The Lumo train is sure to be a stand out piece in any model railway collection.”

Martijn Gilbert, Managing Director of Lumo
