An order for nine new Tri-Mode trains, worth £300m, has been placed by Arriva Group to replace its entire Grand Central fleet.

The order also includes a 10-year maintenance contract.

The trains will use electricity, battery or diesel power and will be made at Newton Aycliffe factory.

Grand Central passengers will see an increase in seat numbers by 20%, meaning an additional 400,000 seats per year.

It is expected that the trains will be delivered in 2028 and are financed through Angel Trains.

“These best-in-class, greener trains will deliver more comfortable journeys and a step-change in capacity on our popular Grand Central services. We look forward to announcing further rolling stock orders, providing jobs and wider economic benefits, as and when our network grows.”

Amanda Furlong, Managing Director of Arriva UK Trains
