Gloucester station subway has reopened following the completion of the station upgrade project.

The improvements have included improving visibility through the subway. It has also been made step-free and is therefore now fully accessible to station users and the wider community.

Great Western Railway (GWR) believes that the modern, improved lighting makes the underpass more welcoming.

CCTV has also been installed in order to provide reassurance and security for the station’s users.

There have also been improvements to the station forecourt, and better access for all transport modes, including pedestrians and cyclists.

The car park has been resurfaced and now has better drainage and lighting, accessible parking bays, taxi pick-up spaces and cycle racks. The car park improvements have allowed bus services to operate directly to and from the station.

The Gloucester station project also included maintaining and investing in the track beds which the subway runs under.

This work was complex, as an 11KV National Grid cable running through the underpass had to be protected. The cable provides back-up power to Gloucestershire Royal Hospital.

Alex McIntyre, Labour MP for Gloucester, officially reopened the subway. Representatives of Gloucester City Council, Gloucestershire County Council, GWR and Network Rail were also in attendance.

The Bruton Way pedestrian crossing reopened last September. The first fifty spaces in the newly resurfaced car park opened along with the accessible parking bays, taxi pick-up and cycle racks. Metz Way and Bruton Way junction opened.

The rest of the car park was reopened a month later, after vegetation had been cleared and safety fencing erected.

A pedestrian crossing reopened at the same time. In October 2024, a new southern car park was opened.

The subway project is the final phase in the development and improvement of the station and is jointly funded by GFirst LEP, GWR, Network Rail, Gloucestershire County Council, Gloucester City Council and the Department for Transport.

“It’s great to see the station underpass reopening after essential renovation work. It provides much needed connectivity between Gloucestershire Royal Hospital and the city centre, and I know many residents will be happy to see this progress.

“Providing a fully accessible route under the station, complete with safety upgrades, is really welcome, and I’m grateful to GWR, Network Rail, Gloucester City Council and Gloucestershire County Council for their partnership delivering this much needed improvement for Gloucester.

“I’m excited to see the next phase of this project take shape with a new mural painted by local residents bringing the walls of the underpass to life. Watch this space!”
