They do, the sluice ate at the side of the locks, some have hydro electric generators, and yes they keep the side sluices in good order. However, the ship
Locks do not really control the levels. Each had two locks but only the larger ones work. On a smaller scale the Llangollen works the same.

More Passengers for the Settle Carlisle line
The Settle to Carlisle nearly has 1 million passengers but there would be far more passengers using the line if Northern would extend all trains from Clitheroe to Hellifield (it would be quicker to walk the 11 miles, than take the train).
They did a study a couple of years that was done in such a way that they knew the results before starting…

@Mike Ashworth sadly I am filming the choir and young brass players from my brass band in Ramsbottom. Annoyingly, it will pass close to the Octagon theatre, as I am sitting down to watch Macbeth. Get the impression there is a shortage of locos for mainline?
