• So much change in 65 years! My conveyance to the hospital (A DMU) that replaced my M7s, Ivatt 2Mts, The 82 Standards and Riddles 4Mts of my early branchline days, Glides away into the trackside foliage! Its now a Jungle? Its driver gives way to passing Wilder beast and Zebra! (and its only single track now)! So close to where i would oil and look after the Bulleid engines of times gone by! Oliver Bulleid himself would retire to live here, I would oil the ‘underneaths’ of all converteds with their new fancy Walshaerts gear and their cladding removed, EG Clan line, Peninsular n Oriental etc of the Merchant navy on its speed trial runs in the late 50s and the West’countries or Squadron sorts! I passed roads that now resemble motorways? A very pleasant run out by DMU train for only £3-70pence return! Mind you, Ive not had the result of my chest X Ray yet? Doh!

      • A nice story there, Clive. Was it double tracked throughout or was it a loop?

        • @RailAdvent Thanks Michael, Double track 6 mile from leaving the Exeter London Waterloo line, to the 1st brass tablet in leather transfer pouch for single line running (in old days) for a further 7 miles with 3 more stations! But these days i saw no Tablet change, 2 trains meet/ Road barrier lifts! Signals are electric! And i saw no platform or signal staff at all! I did not have to show my £3-70pence ticket bought by cash from a (machine)? But train was (Clean) speedy, A lot quieter this day and age? In mid 60s exhaust would vent between carriages? and today no passenger view of the line ahead! A red light on the rear! But no tail lamp to show an entire train has left that section! Its efficient but run by Ghost’s? PS, A ladies voice on speaker announced each station! (A good explanatory addition). My exit station clean/ tidy (See photo) was once just fields? And the Admiralty large store of every type of wood known to man for our British shipyards is now a housing estate! A more detailed answer to your question would need a publisher? Cheers.
