Watford and Croxley stations on the London Underground’s Metropolitan Line are to celebrate a century of operation this Sunday. Both stations opened on the 2nd of November 1925 when the Metropolitan Line was extended to Watford.
As part of this significant milestone at both stations, Transport for London (TfL) and Hertfordshire County Council are hosting a series of free events on the anniversary date this coming Sunday.

Visitors to Watford station will be able to experience a living exhibition in one of the platform waiting rooms. Hosted by the Museum of Watford, the exhibition will be open from 10:00 a.m. to 3:00 p.m. and will enable visitors to time-travel through the history of both Watford and Croxley stations. Covering the Metropolitan Lines extension, the growth of both towns, how the extension created new communities, and how the line inspired and connected commuters and residents across northwest London during the past century.
Hourly, in-depth tours of both Croxley and Watford stations will take place between 11:00 am and 2:00 pm. Curious visitors will learn about Croxley’s history, originally called Croxley Green until 1949. The station tour at Watford will also cover the transition era from steam to electric traction on the Metropolitan Line.

Due to popular demand, the station tours at both stations currently have waiting lists, and visitors can sign up for these via the TfL website.
Several other events will also be taking place at both stations, with a competition to design a new Metroland Postcard. A team from TfL will also be attending, talking about job and apprenticeship opportunities on the London Underground
“Croxley and Watford stations have helped connect Hertfordshire and northwest London into central London for 100 years, playing an important part in creating more jobs and opportunities for those in the surrounding county. We encourage customers to drop-by to this fantastic free celebration, and step back in time at two of the oldest stations on TfL’s network.”
Emma Strain, TfL’s Customer Director
