A £4.5 million refurbishment is transforming Stevenage station, with major upgrades to canopies, staircase roofs, and platform lighting now well underway. The four-month project is progressing well and is on track for completion by the end of June.

Existing canopy roofs have been removed and replaced with durable, weatherproof structures, alongside the renewal of the supporting timber framework.

Installation of a modern lighting system has also begun, improving visibility across platforms. Work continues on upgrading the station’s staircase roofs.

Preparations began during a January engineering closure, when specialist teams installed protective Faraday cages, allowing safe work near live overhead lines while keeping trains running and disruption to a minimum.

The station remains open throughout the project, though scaffolding will stay in place until November. Its removal will coincide with other planned engineering works, further reducing the impact on passengers and rail services.

“This refurbishment at Stevenage station will transform the canopies, upgrade the roof structure and resolve long-standing issues with leaks. Along with the fully renewed platform lighting system, the improvements will make the station more welcoming. It will keep passengers safe, secure, and dry in future.

“The project team has worked incredibly hard to keep the programme moving, and we’re pleased to see such significant progress made already.”

Danni Parker-Rankine, Network Rail scheme project manager.
