The Rail Accident Investigation Branch has released a report with advice following an incident that occurred earlier in March.

On the evening of 15 March 2025, two track workers were injured near Port Glasgow station when a wagon pushed by a rail-mounted crane struck them during a track renewal.

One worker was seriously hurt after being trapped between the wagon and another crane’s lifting beam; the other suffered minor injuries under the wagon.

The RAIB investigation found a section of track had been lowered onto the line ahead of the moving wagon. Workers were nearby discussing its placement when a stop command failed to reach the crane operator. Limited visibility and a lack of front-end lighting on the wagon contributed to the collision.

The report highlighted issues with compliance with Network Rail rules on crane communications and radio standards. RAIB made three recommendations: one to contractor Swietelsky Construction on communications, and two to Network Rail on radio protocols and compliance.

Key lessons included briefing practices, wagon lighting, and safety-critical communications.
