The Leighton Buzzard Railway welcomed the 2026 season in style on Mother’s Day, 15 March, with more than 300 visitors gathering at Page’s Park Station.

The day began with a cheerful proclamation from Town Crier Chris Morgan, before Town Mayor Councillor David Bligh and Deputy Mayor Councillor James Emm waved off the first train of the season.

The entirely volunteer-run line ran two classic Andrew Barclay steam engines, the 1919 0-6-0T ‘Doll’ and her 1918 sister ‘Gertrude’, providing five departures throughout the day.

Mothers enjoyed a complimentary family photo and potted plant, while all visitors explored the historic Stonehenge Works site, discovering the town’s rich history of sand quarrying and transport.

The railway also celebrated the achievements of its volunteers. Esker Saward graduated as a Passenger Train Guard, while Jamie Randall, who joined the railway as a youngster, realised his dream of becoming a fully qualified Steam Engine Driver after years as a Fireman.

The recently established Junior Railway Club continues to nurture young enthusiasts from age ten, giving them hands-on experience until they are ready to join the team fully.

The Leighton Buzzard Railway, known affectionately as “England’s friendly little line,” welcomes new volunteers eager to be part of its thriving community. With a full season of steam services ahead, locals and visitors alike can look forward to historic rides, family fun, and a chance to experience living railway history.
