US freight company CSX have announced a $670 million deal with Wabtec as part of plans to modernise its locomotive fleet with 100 new Evolution Series engines, 50 upgraded units, and a package of digital optimisation tools.
The new Evolution Series locomotives are built to endure long-haul journeys, delivering stronger traction and improved reliability. The new Locomotives also have lower fuel consumption without sacrificing performance.
At the same time, CSX intends to convert 50 ageing D9 locomotives from DC to AC traction, extending their service life and bringing them in line with the rest of the fleet. Upgrades will also introduce advanced diagnostic and control systems to locomotives as a further enhancement.
Each locomotive, new and modernised, will be equipped with Trip Optimiser, which features Smart Horsepower by Ton, an EPA-Certified system that fine-tunes fuel and operational efficiency.
Deliveries of the new Evolution Series engines are slated to begin this year, with the modernisation of existing units rolling out from 2027.

“Our locomotive fleet is a fundamental element of our safe and reliable railroad. Modernizing these critical assets strengthens network performance and supports the level of service our customers depend on.”
Mike Cory, Executive Vice President and Chief Operating Officer at CSX.
“CSX’s fleet modernization initiative underscores its strong commitment to enhancing operational efficiency and delivering reliable customer service. Our unique partnership supports CSX’s strategic approach to long term fleet planning. By combining new and modernized locomotives with our industry-proven digital solutions, we expect to continue supporting improvements in fuel performance, operational efficiency, and reliability across CSX’s rail operations.”
Rogerio Mendonca, President, Freight Equipment at Wabtec.
