Mattel has unveiled a new look for Thomas the Tank Engine as part of a relaunch this Autumn.

Thomas debuted back in 1945 and has progressed from book illustrations to CGI and 2D animation.

Mattel says that this refreshed design is inkeeping with Thomas’ core.

Mattel also says that the new design includes a modern look with contemporary details but stays true to its storytelling roots.

This is just the start of the refresh, with a new logo, new branding and updated character designs.

More announcements will be made throughout 2026.

“Thomas has been a trusted companion for families for more than 80 years, and the new look reflects both where the brand comes from and where it’s headed on its next adventure. We returned to the elements that parents and kids love most while updating the design to feel relevant for today’s preschool audience. Authentic train details, timelessness and emotional storytelling form the foundation for the years ahead for Thomas & Friends.”

Ted Wu, senior vice president and Global Head of Vehicles & Building Sets at Mattel

  1. I haven’t particularly followed TTTE for a few years, although some don’t like the coloured iris and the bouncing, I think this version is FAR better than the previous 2D incarnation. My favourite will always be the original model version, but whatever they do, some people will love Thomas and some will always find fault with it
