A section of railway land has been transformed in Preston with the help of Network Rail and the King’s Trust.

The forgotten piece of land had been a popular spot for flytipping and anti-social behaviour.

The land near Skeffington Road in Deepdale now has a new look thanks to the work from community groups and volunteers.

The group had to remove sofas, mattresses, bikes and several tonnes of household waste. In total, the groups alongside Andy Pratt MBE have removed 70 tonnes of waste over 900 metres.

It was an issue raised within the community, and King’s Trust are the latest to get involved in the clean-up.

They spent time litter-picking and removing weeds and brambles, and the area now features a new flower bed.

“It has been heartbreaking to see this old railway line being targeted by waste criminals. But now, thanks to the enthusiasm and hard work of community groups we can really see that it’s starting to take shape to be a positive space for the future.

“We hate to see fly-tipping happening on the railway and anyone who spots it should immediately contact the British Transport Police.”

Ian Croucher, Lancashire maintenance protection coordinator from Network Rail
