Wigan North Western now has a new mural, which has been unveiled as part of a community project.

Created by South East Lancashire Community Rail Partnership, the artwork titled ‘Wonders of Wigan’ celebrates the history and heritage of the town through local landmarks.

The photographic art is set as a ‘then and now’ journey, including images of Haigh Hall, Wigan Pier, and The Old Courts.

In celebration of Railway 200, the mural also features Wigan’s two railway stations, Wigan North Western and Wigan Wallgate, as well as the former station Wigan Central.

To complete the mural, South East Lancashire Community Rail Partnership worked with local photography students, artists and Frank Orwell, a former photographer for Wigan Newspapers.

The project was part of Avanti West Coast’s Community Rail Project Fund and can be found in the approach to the station underpass.

“This new mural is a great addition to the station. It offers another point of interest in the local area and brings a different insight into the town and its heritage.

“We’re pleased to have played a part in joining local people to celebrate Wigan in this unique way, as it is a place we’re proud to serve. Sharing the stories behind key landmarks, such as the station is also pertinent, as this year marks the 200th anniversary of the UK’s railways. We hope those who call it home, as well as those who are visiting for work or leisure discover something new about this great town.”

Leonie Purvis, Avanti West Coast Station Manager at Wigan North Western
