The railway station at Bolton in Greater Manchester is now more environmentally friendly after new trees and planters were planted around the station.
Bolton is the latest station managed by Northern to receive a ‘biodiversity makeover’, and follows similar ecological improvements at Harrogate in North Yorkshire, Hebden Bridge in West Yorkshire, St Helens Central in Merseyside, Worksop in Nottinghamshire, and Buxton in Derbyshire, which was completed last Summer.
Stations on the Bentham Line in North Yorkshire also have bug hotels.

Derbyshire Wildlife Trust worked with Northern to plant 16 new trees around the station and installed 20 planters that had already been filled with established greenery and wildflower seeds.
It also installed the station’s first ‘bug hotel’ to attract insects and other wildlife.
Every year, more than 3.6m people pass through Bolton railway station, and the latest improvements will make their time at the station more pleasant.
It is also a stop on the Yorkshire Dales Explorer train service that started last year to provide travellers a day out in the Yorkshire Dales.

Last Monday, 3rd March, the UK took part in World Wildlife Day, a United Nations initiative designed to celebrate wild animals and plants, and their unique contribution to people and the planet.
Mike Roe, safety and environment director at Northern, said: “We have been working closely with the team at Derbyshire Wildlife Trust to create a comprehensive biodiversity strategy for our stations. Following the success at Buxton station last year, we’re pleased to continue that work by enriching Bolton station with a number of site-specific measures to bring much-needed green space to the town centre. The goal is that our stations are positive contributors to their community’s ecosystems and provide wildlife with greater access to nature.”

Rather than wasting time and money on stuff like this it would be better if Network Rail got to grips with the graffiti plaguing nearly every mile of track, cleared the overgrown vegetation and generated had a big clean up of the scrap metal and other rubbish everywhere.
