Transport for London (TfL) has issued an update on the construction and installation of step free accessibility assets at Surrey Quays station on the Windrush Line that will make the station fully accessible to all by summer 2026.
During a weekend closure of the line in January, workers lifted the span of the new footbridge into place over the lines and secured it to the two lift towers on both platforms 1 & 2.
The new ticket office and station entrance being built on platform 2 is also on track for completion next year, with workers having completed most of the roof work.

Once the works have concluded at Surrey Quay’s station, passengers will be able to benefit from additional spaces in the booking offices, while the step-free access footbridge will ease congestion on the narrower stairways on the pre-existing footbridge, which will help those who have mobility impairments or passengers that travel with luggage and pushchairs.
Of the work left to be completed, the lifts for the towers are yet to be installed, and the rest of the booking office on platform 2 is yet to be completed.
When the work is done, the new entrance on platform 2 is expected to see 60% of customers that use the station pass through its ticket gate line.
The step-free access work at Surrey Quays is also preparing the station to boost its capacity and meet growing demand.
Over the last few months, upgrades to the power and signalling systems along the Windrush Line have allowed TfL to increase the lines of train services, which will see 18 trains per hour between Surrey Quays and Dalston Junction from December 2026.

The extra capacity and frequency bodes well as a local 53-acre plan will see new homes, offices, retail and leisure facilities being built near the station over the next 10-years.
This separate building project is funded by Local Government and The Ministry of Housing, with a contribution from British Land.
There are also plans afoot for a new station to be built between Surrey Quays and Queens Road, Peckham.
The proposed Surrey Canal station will serve New Bermondsey, a new housing development expected to double the area’s 7,000 homes to 14,000.
“Major improvements at Surrey Quays station remain on track to be delivered in summer 2026, transforming the journeys for thousands of customers who use the station every day. New lifts will make it more accessible for everyone, and the new entrance will provide better connections with the local area. These station improvements will support the new homes and jobs being created in Canada Water area.”
