Network Rail has confirmed that it has completed its four weeks of track and signalling work and that train services have resulted through Westbury in Wiltshire.

Its workers have completely replaced the railway junction to the south of Westbury station, which is managed by Great Western Railway (GWR).

Up to 150 workers replaced 1,700 tonnes of ballast and laid 212 new pieces of track. They worked day and night during weather conditions which included wind, rain and snow.

Network Rail will be carrying out follow-up work over the weekends of Saturday 1 and Sunday 2 February and plus Saturday 8 and Sunday 9 March.

The work will include attention to the junction to the north of Westbury, and replacing track at the village of Hawkeridge, two-and-a-half miles to the north of Westbury.

Westbury station closed on Christmas Eve to enable the work to take place. During the closure, Network Rail also worked on repairing the platform canopy roof, which had been damaged by storms.

GWR also finished its work refurbishing the station toilets, waiting rooms and staff accommodation.

Further south but also in Wiltshire, Network Rail workers completed strengthening work on Sherrington viaduct. The structure crosses the River Wylye.

More information about the work that Network Rail has carried out in the area is available on this dedicated web page.

Westbury is due to be served by additional train services starting later this year.

“This vitally important work will ensure the continued safe and reliable use of this key part of our network for years to come.

“As well as the maintenance of the infrastructure which Network Rail provide to us, we have also taken the opportunity to make some station improvements, and we are really grateful for customers’ patience during this period.”
